In 1964, Ford invented the pony-car class with the first Mustang. Over the ensuing 45 years, it has become the ultimate survivor of the breed because, unlike its competitors from General Motors and Chrysler, the Mustang has never ceased production. For most of the 1980s, the Ford pony car was our favorite in the category, thanks to its strong performance, usable back seat, and affordable price, although the Camaro edged it out through the 1990s.
